  WHEN PRINTING BARCODES
It is important that you aim for the best contrast between the background (paper) and the foreground (ink), which is why most bar-codes are printed black on white.
Always leave a clear area before and after the printed code (at least 7mm). This is called the 'Quiet Zone' and this saves the scanner from being confused with other printed information. Avoid putting boxes around bar-codes for this reason.
Remember that bar-code scanners use visible red light therefore there MUST be carbon content in the ink. Black ink without 'carbon' will produce nice looking but un-readable codes. If you are having problems reading bar-codes, make a photo-copy of the code and try again. The copied version WILL have a carbon content.
Also remember that grease is basically carbon, so if your environment exposes your labels to oil or grease , this will be the reason that your bar-codes are un-readable.
